Simple Guide to Domestic Rainwater Harvesting Solutions

There are many Domestic Rainwater Harvesting Systems on the market, but it is important to consider the differences between them as it can mean a big difference to you and the final solution for your site.

Rainwater Tank

If the Rainwater Tanks are made in one piece and not in two halves, with no seams or seals, they cannot leak.

OASIS rainwater tanks are a one piece construction.

Warranty

The warranty on the tank is important as a Domestic Rainwater Harvester is a lifetime investment. Some manufacturers' warranties are only 12 months.  OASIS rainwater harvesting tanks have a 30 year warranty.

Rainwater Filters

The type and quality of rainwater filter is paramount for any system, as the filter is responsible for removing debris from the rainwater and keeping the tank clean. Some filters, used on many continental systems, are not suitable for use in the UK as they require a large volume of water to be passed through the filter in one go, such as a storm or heavy down pour. In drizzly or light rain UK conditions, these filters are very inefficient and much of the rain by-passes the tank.  OASIS rainwater harvesting systems use filters suited to UK rain conditions.

Pump

Rainwater Pumps are generally located either inside the tank or in the building. If the pump is located in the building then it must draw the water from the tank and this will restrict the siting of the tank.  By locating the pump in the tank it can do what it is designed to do -pump not draw.  It also means that you are not irritated by a noisy pump operating every time water is used.  OASIS pumps are in the tank.

Direct / Indirect System

Direct systems pump water straight to appliances whereas an indirect system provides water to a header tank at the top of the building and water is supplied by gravity from the header tank to the appliances.

Indirect systems exert less pressure on the appliance's seals and fittings, but the pressure can be reduced if the head of water is not sufficient.  OASIS rainwater harvesting systems can be either type and you can choose part of the system to be direct and part to be indirect if required.

Noise

There will be a noise implication associated with an in house pump system. In tank pump systems means silence in the house.  OASIS pumps are in the tank.

Mains Water Backup

Mains water back up must be provided encase the tanks runs dry. This can be done either by topping up the tank or a direct feed to the appliances. If the mains supply tops up the tank then the residual water in the tank is continually replaced and hence cannot go stagnant.  Many systems top up the tank fully, meaning that if it rains soon after, the rain is wasted. Oasis rainwater harvesters top up only enough for the system to work, making it more efficient at saving the rain.

Power Failure

Ensure that in the event of a power failure the system has a means of supplying water to at least flush toilets. In many systems a power cut results in pump failure and no water can be supplied to appliances.  OASIS domestic rainwater harvesting systems supply water even in a power failure.

Rodent Guard

A simple overflow for when the tank is full is not sufficient. Rodent protection must be present to prevent rats and mice entering the tank through the overflow pipe. OASIS harvesters have a fool proof permanent rodent guard.

Syphon Skimmer

This is essential for keeping the tank and water surface clean from pollens and dust which taint the water.  OASIS rainwater harvesting systems have a very efficient syphon skimmer.

Holiday Mode

It is important for domestic systems that the header tank is not left with water in it when you go on holiday as the water can be stagnant and smelly on your return and increase the risk of Legionnaires DiseaseOASIS rainwater harvesters have a simple non-electronic 'Holiday Mode' system to avoid this.

Installation

OASIS rainwater harvesters have a gravel backfill tank option that saves hundreds of pounds on the installation costs.  The gravel backfill tanks still have the 30 year warranty.
