An Equestrian property in Yorkshire now waters their horses for free thanks to an OASIS rainwater harvester.
Horses can drink up to 45 litres/day and the bills were mounting. The owner, Anna, decided to use free rainwater instead and is delighted by the results.
Anna said: "The horses seem to like the taste more. We tested them using a bucket of tap water and one of rainwater and the rainwater was the first bucket to be empty. I have been amazed at the fact that the tank hasn't needed to top-up from the mains at all this winter. The roof area from each stable seems to provide all the water that one horse drinks. For some reason, we also had water when everyone else was frozen-up. All I can think of is that the water must be warmer stored underground."
The system chosen was based on the roof area and the water useage expected. It is important not to oversize the tank as it may become stagnant during periods of dry weather.
Anna added "I have around 30 horses in at any one time. OASIS calculated that my total roof area including the stables and hay barn was 530M2. For this roof area in North Yorkshire I was able to have a tank that holds 18,000 litres and this has kept me going all winter. The horses are on automatic drinkers, so the system has to be reliable in case of a drought. We use the water for washing horses and washing out as well, though we only do that when horses come in and out of the yard. It's brilliant 'cause I don't have to worry about rising water charges anymore"
