Water companies leaking 130 litres per customer every day
130 litres of water for every customer is being wasted on a daily basis by some Water Companies because of leaking pipes. This is more than the average amount used per person per day.
In total, leaking pipes lost 3.28 billion litres of water every single day last year, the equivalent of 14 million baths of water.
Processing and serving us water uses between 2 and 3% of all electricity in the UK, and the processing of 3.28 billion litres produces 0ver 97 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, so this waste is a disgrace.
Ofwat, the industry regulator who published the shameful figures, said that more than a quarter of all water companies in England and Wales failed to do enough to tackle leaks last year.
The Water Companies must to do better if they want to persuade customers to waste less water themselves.
Ofwat's annual report said while companies continued to deliver safe, reliable supplies, six out of 21 firms did not meet their leakage targets.
Top offender was Yorkshire Water, which lost an average of 295 million litres a day, or the equivalent of 130 litres for every household it supplies.
The water industry said that it was economically unviable to fix all the leaks. It would cost, it estimates, up to £100 billion to replace all the pipes under Britain, a move that would still fail to stop all the leaks.
Regina Finn, chief executive of Ofwat, said: "These companies are on watch, they know that we'll take tough action. We have in the past – we've made companies invest their own money in fixing these leaks* . We expect these companies to restore their service."
*OASIS Says: We assumed that the leaks WERE fixed using the Water Companies own money! Whose money DO they use????
